Tax bills are mailed once per year in July and include the third and fourth quarters of the current tax year and the first and second quarters of the upcoming tax year. Taxes can be paid and viewed online.
If you are mailing your Tax payment, please mail it to Borough Hall Tax Collector, 221 South 5th Avenue, Highland Park, NJ 08904. Effective January 1, 2020 the Borough's PO Box will no longer be in use.
Property taxes are due February 1st, May 1st, August 1st and November 1st. Failure to receive a tax bill does not affect the due date or the date that interest begins to accrue. It is the responsibility of each tax payer to obtain the amount due on their property. There is a 10 day grace period. Tax payments received after the grace period will accrue interest back to the first. The interest rate for delinquent taxes by state statute is as follows: The first $1500 of delinquency is at 8% (APR) any balance over $1500 is at 18%. The 18% interest remains until the delinquency is brought current. A 6% year-end penalty will be assessed on the last day of the fiscal year on delinquent accounts in excess of $10,000.

In New Jersey, all municipalities are required to hold at least one tax sale per year. The properties sold at the tax sale are those with delinquent property taxes and/or municipal charges. (Pursuant to N.J.S.A 54:5-19). The Borough of Highland Park will hold its annual online accelerated tax lien sale on Wednesday, December 18, 2019 at 8:00 AM.
Due to the observance of Veteran’s Day, the November due date for taxes was extended to Tuesday, November 12, 2019. All delinquencies as of the close of business on November 12, 2019, are now subject to the tax sale process.
Per this process, delinquencies will be subject to a 2% cost of tax sale (up to $100). In addition, delinquencies will be subject to a mailing fee of $25 for each mailing. Two mailings are scheduled during this process.
After November 12, 2019, the amount owed is calculated as follows:
Delinquent Taxes/Other Municipal Charges + Interest + Cost of Sale + Mailing Fees = Total Amount Owed
All payments received after November 12, 2019, MUST be made using guaranteed funds: cash, cashier’s check or money order. Any other forms of payment WILL NOT be accepted. In addition, the online credit/debit card payment options WILL NOT be available after November 12, 2019.
The statute also requires a Public Notice of Tax Sale. If payment is not received by November 12, 2019, the property owner’s name will appear in this Public Notice.
Note: Failure of the property owner to receive a notice of tax sale properly mailed by the Tax Collector shall not constitute grounds to void the subsequent tax sale.
Secure Drop Box
There is a secure drop box for Tax and Water payments located to the left of the front entrance of Borough Hall for your convenience marked "Please put payments here." All payments left in the drop box will be posted on the next business day. Please do not leave cash payments in the drop box.
