Bring your own bag ordinance Phase II begins on November 1, 2019
Sustainable Highland Park hosted two public forums and spoke with every retailer in town prior to proposing the ordinance to the Borough Council earlier this year.
Eliminating plastic bag use is a small but important step in continuing to green our town, since on average 1,500 single-use bags are used per household per year and only about 1% of those bags are recycled. The bags that end up in landfills take more than 500 years to decompose. (Source: the Center for Biological Diversity).
As a note, any shoppers receiving government assistance are eligible to receive a paper carryout bag - if the store chooses to provide them - free of charge.
