What's with those trailers by the Irving School?

Post Date:10/04/2023 3:00 PM
Before we share the official announcement about the trailers parked by the Irving School playground, by Woodbridge Ave and South 11th Ave., let us first reassure you that they are nothing nefarious.

The trailers are not Highland Park's own version of Area 51. We are not storing the remains of UFO's or alien creatures there.

We are not currently housing or planning to house undocumented migrants in the trailers.

They are not the top-secret location where the federal government is hiding Elvis, JFK, or Jimmy Hoffa.

And No, they are not the confidential love-nest of Taylor Swift and her new boyfriend, Kansas City Chief's Tight-End Travis Kelce. Trust us, if it *was* their hideout, we'd tell *everybody*.

So what are those new trailers by the Irving School?

As Highland Park Public Schools Superintendent explained in a recent letter to the schools community:
"Starting from the upcoming school year, we will be expanding our preschool program to full day to accommodate more children in our district. The expansion will involve the use of modular classrooms.

Last year, Governor Murphy announced the expansion of early childhood education by providing school districts with funding for full day preschool for all three and four year olds. This is part of his strategic plan for all districts to offer full day preschool by the end of the decade. Research consistently shows that early childhood education plays a vital role in a child’s development, setting the foundation for lifelong learning. By expanding our program, we aim to meet this demand and offer an enriching educational experience to more children.

To accommodate the increase in enrollment and change from half day to a full day program, we will be utilizing modular classrooms. Modular classrooms are an efficient and cost-effective solution to create the additional learning spaces as we move forward with ideas for constructing additional classroom spaces. The four modular classrooms have been placed outside of Irving Primary School and are visible from Woodbridge Avenue. They are full equipped and insulated classrooms that have all of the safety features and necessary requirements for classrooms.

We are dedicated to ensuring that preschool expansion proceeds smoothly and efficiently. We believe that investing in early education is not only a wise decision for our community’s future but also a testament to our dedication to every child’s success. Your support and understanding during this process are greatly appreciated."
