In the process of rolling out this year's water meter replacement program, the Borough learned from the VAAD HaRabbonim of Raritan Valley (a consortium of rabbis leading Orthodox synagogues in Highland Park and Edison) and The Raritan Valley Orthodox Jewish Community Association of NJ (AKA The ROC of NJ, a non-profit entity serving the welfare and wellbeing of local families, institutions, and businesses) that the replacement water meters the Borough had designated presented challenges to Sabbath observance for Jewish residents. The VAAD and The ROC shared information on an alternate water meter, at a slightly elevated cost, that would mitigate all concerns regarding Sabbath observance.

The Borough is happy to accommodate the religious needs of our Jewish residents and has placed an order for these new water meters and we hope to receive a sufficient quality within the next few months. These special-order 'Sabbath-observant' meters will come at an added cost of $10/meter, which will be charged to each consumer who requests them in their next quarterly water bill.

In the interim, the Borough advises residents seeking the 'Sabbath-observant' water meters to refrain from scheduling a visit to their home by our vendor, National Metering Services, until we announce that the 'Sabbath-observant' water meters have been received. If a representative from National Metering Services comes to your door seeking to set an appointment, please tell them that you are waiting until the Borough informs you that the Sabbath-observant' water meters have been received.
