The Highland Park Bureau of Fire Prevention was formed to enforce the New Jersey Uniform Fire Code and the local fire prevention code within the Borough of Highland Park. The Fire Prevention Bureau is comprised of the fire official, a fire inspector, and support staff. The Fire Prevention Inspectors also investigate complaints, educate the public about fire safety, and conduct fire investigations.
Both Inspectors are certified Fire Fighters and respond to emergency fire calls during working hours Monday through Friday, 7:30 am until 5:30 pm. The Borough also employees a staff of part time Fire Fighters to man the Fire Station between the hours of 5:30 pm and 7:30 am. These Fire Fighters report to the Fire Official.
The Highland Park Volunteer Fire Department (HPVFD) lead by Chief Mike McMahon was established in 1899 and protects life and property from fire and other disasters 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Firefighters respond to an average of 500 calls per year, supply all fire suppression for the Borough, and aid neighboring towns in major emergencies.
The members also assist at motor vehicle accidents, water emergencies, sites with downed electrical wires, and community fire prevention activities. The Fire Department is managed by volunteer officers and firefighters who depend on support from the citizens of Highland Park.
